Short Walk
Overview
Hydra is a strikingly beautiful island in the Argosaronic Gulf with a rich history which comes to life as your local tour leader Maria walks you back through time. Sparsely populated in 1600 you will learn about the island’s history and how, after 400 years of Turkish rule, it played a crucial role in the Revolution leading to Greek independence in 1821. By 1820 Hydra was one of the richest locales in the Mediterranean, fortunes having been amassed through shipbuilding and trade. In their passionate desire for independence many Hydriot Admirals, political figures and sailors sacrificed these fortunes for the cause.
